Lillian Gibbons articles

Lillian Gibbons was a Winnipeg journalist and historian known for preserving the stories of the city’s historic homes and their residents. In 1935, she wrote a popular column for the Winnipeg Tribune, which later formed the basis of her best-selling book, Stories Houses Tell, followed three years later by a second volume.

She often visited these homes just before their demolition, documenting their architecture and the lives of the people who once lived there. Over her career, she chronicled more than 300 homes, providing an invaluable record of Winnipeg’s past.

For her contributions to heritage preservation, Gibbons was awarded the Manitoba Centennial Medal by the Manitoba Historical Society in 1970 and later received a Distinguished Service Award from Heritage Winnipeg. Her work remains a cherished resource for historians and heritage enthusiasts.
